The neighboring regions within the area of Andalusia have different music due to the number of countries that truly shaped Spain’s culture and music.

A known music technique that is acquired from Spain is Flamenco, which a lot of people mistakenly considered to be the national music of Spain. On the contrary, Flamenco is only known just in one section of Spain; an autonomous community in Spain known as Andalusia, which is viewed to be the largest in terms of land area in the country. The surprising fact is that numerous things is still unsolved about Flamenco as an art form.

An undeniable fact states that Flamenco originated from the lower levels of society in Andalusia; during the difficult times and numerous people have biases against Gypsies which various people believe have influence on the roots of Flamenco. It is said that Flamenco was heavily influenced by gypsy music and during those times, gypsies were biased by several different cultures; in terms of social status, gypsies were regarded to be at the bottom of the barrel; aside from gypsy influence, Flamenco is also thought to have influences coming from Moorish music as well as cultures from India, Egypt, and Byzantine. Because Flamenco was mostly being danced by lower levels of society, the upper class people and historians did not care much in recording their music, so there are very little inscriptions and records that can be found. Unfortunately, most of the people from the Andalusian regions were of persecuted lineages, they were also mostly illiterate so they had no means of recording their own cultural tradition for posterity; most of the history of Flamenco has been lost and greatly altered because it had only been passed on through oral tradition.

Researchers and historians, as well as experts our time are still trying to determine the exact roots and history of Flamenco; it’s not even sure where and how Flamenco got its name. So much so that until today, many people is trying to acquire more information and do this musical and dance style all over the world.
