Easily Avoidable Copywriting Mistakes
It isn't true at all that copywriting is tough to do, even though probably most people think it is. But it is important to know some of the more common mistakes that can have a negative effect on your results. Ok, so now we'll move on to discuss three mistakes that most newbies make when they write their copy.
The first simple mistake you have to avoid is forgetting to learn about the product you will be promoting with your writing. If you don't understand the product you are writing about you aren't going to be able to convince someone to buy it. Your potential customer will quickly read through you and know that you don't know what you are selling. This will obviously have a negative impact on your conversions as well as on your sales rate. It is important to know the product inside and out--in depth knowledge is imperative for a copywriter. Once you know the product completely you will be able to use creativity to illustrate the better points. When you are sure about your subject it is easier to communicate about it to the prospect and make sure they get the right impression. Remember... paragraphs are not to be more than 5 sentences, but it's ok if they're shorter than that. And remember that white space is your friend in sales letters, it reduces strain on the eyes and helps readers to stay relaxed. If you make your readers work to hard at anything they will just click away and be gone. Make sure your paragraphs relate to only a single idea or point, only. You need to maintain the flow and keep all the content relevant, because sometimes you tend to stray away. Stories have been used with deadly effectiveness for tens of thousands of years, so that is one device you can use in any of your copy. A good story can be critical to the success of your copy, but you have to be somewhat careful how you tell it. The format for the paragraphs holds true for the entire length of you sales letter.
Hopefully you're aware that copywriting is a totally different animal than the English you sweated over in school. It's the kind of writing that's basic, simple, and easy to understand for about a level around the 7th or 8th grade - believe it or not. Try to find sales letters written by real professionals, and then study them because it's worth it to know how to write them well. Bullet points give you the opportunity to open-up your copy and provide "white space" which is important for breaking up the copy and reducing eye strain and monotony.
