Get Familiar With Mixed Matrial Arts Today
A full contact sport that offers a wide variety of techniques from different styles, both stand-up and on the ground is called Mixed Martial Arts or MMA. This includes both stand-up and on the ground skills such as kick boxing, Karate, Judo, wrestling and Muay Thai. MMA allows one to fight with the whole body by combining the arts of throwing, striking and joint manipulating techniques.
Each of the disciplines has a long history and Muay Thai, for example, was utilized for warfare in the 1800's. Over the years, these fights became spectator sports to entertain Kings in various countries. Muay Thai means "Art of Eight Limbs" and makes use of eight contact points. These include knee hits, punches, kicks and elbow strikes performed in a stand-up position. This is no comparison to the sport of Western boxing that only has two points, hands and feet.
Similar to wresting, ground fighting involves holding the opponent down through grappling moves. Preventing strikes or getting the dominant position while on the ground is clinched fighting. The only equipment needed is small gloves, open-fingered or closed, depending on the country, type of fight and weight category. Victory in MMA is determined by knockout, submission or doctor stoppage. Referees have the ability to stop a fight if one of the opponents has sustained serious bodily injury or there have been numerous warnings and fouls causing disqualification.
Mixed Martial Arts became an official sport in the US in 1992 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was held. The no-holds-barred fight with few rules became a disciplined sport including time limits and restrictions reducing the risk of bodily harm. The UFC expanded from the United States to Canada in 2008. Pay-per-view events have drawn huge audiences and Calgary is comparative to massive cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago. People stand in line for hours and shows are sold out within minutes.
There are several schools in Calgary that teach MMA and individuals from all over the world travel here to learn from the best. If this sport interests you, it is cautioned that one should watch a few sessions before committing. Instructors are willing to speak with potential students and enroll them in starter classes to make sure this is an adequate sport for that person. Competitive martial arts differ from self defense and should not be categorized as the same. Although there may be some overlapping techniques, the skills are not practical for someone to make use of in an assault type situation.

Do you have your own training equiptment?
mma gloves, boxing gloves, heavy bag, speed bag, double ended striking bag, shin pads, focus mitts, thai pads, chest protector, helmet, shields, weapons, shoes, mats, bob, anything!!!
If so please specify what you have, and what made you decide to get it.
Also do you get off brand or name brand products. Which brand (if any) do you think is better?
I practically have my own little gym away from the gym: 100lb heavy bag, thai pads, focus mitts, double ended striking bag, and i am about to get a speed bag and chest protector. All my stuff its pretty much everlast or century but then again thats just about all they sell at Academy anyways.
I love practicing even at home but they only problem is finding someone to train with. So most of my time is just on the heavy bag. Or watching my form in the mirror.

Special thanks to Lionsgate, I recently got to interview actor Gavin-Keith
Umeh who's part of the cast of ONE FOR THE MONEY (starring Katheirne Heigl)
which opens this weekend. Gavin also co-starred in one of my favorite and
sadly short lived series last year, Lights Out. Gavin talked about his role in
