Your SPCC Plan - Berms and Compliance
The Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan for your facility, in accordance with 40 CFR 112.7, outlines specific prevention systems which must be used to prevent oil discharge from reaching navigable waters. These include the use of:
- Dikes, berms, or retaining walls which must be impervious enough to contain oil
- Curbs
- Culverting, gutters, or other drainage systems
- Weirs, booms, or other barriers
When developing your facility’s plan, a sufficient amount of supplies must be on hand to contain the largest spill that could be experienced. All employees and contractors must know spill prevention and control procedures and must be able to handle the necessary equipment. An industrial supply company, such as Spill 911, carries all of these supplies and is quite knowledgeable about their use.
Spill Containment Berms
There are a large number of different spill berms available for spill containment and their capacities vary. You must have an adequate quantity and type on hand to handle the largest possible spill at your facility.
Throw N’ Go Berms
- These are the quickest berms to use in any situation, including emergencies. The setup could not be simpler, with just 2 people the berm can be setup in a minute. Because of the sidewall construction of the Throw N' Go Berms makes entering and exiting any side easy. When the berm fills with fluid the walls rise automatically. Optional track mats can prevent any damage to the berm.
- This berm helps meet the requirements for spill containment of hazardous waste as outlined in EPA 40 CFR 264.175 and EPA 40 CFR 112.7 for oil. It can be used for spill containment or prevention when loading or unloading tank cars.
- Sump capacity ranges from 154 gallons to over 7,045 gallons.
Stinger Berms
- These berms lead the industry as there is a wide range of sizes and sump capacities for the containment of large spills. They have flexible sidewalls and are easy to assemble, which makes them great for an immediate response in industrial, government, construction incidents. They are widely used for emergency response and for managing transportation spills.
- The flexible sidewalls set up quickly yet fold up quickly to a compact size which is easy to transport. These berms have outstanding rip, puncture, and tear resistance and are suitable for use on difficult terrain.
- Sump capacity ranges from179 gallons to 7,405 gallons.
Rapid Rise Berms
- These berms are used during loading and unloading of a tank car and the walls stay down allowing vehicles to drive on from any angle. With the Rapid Rise Berm there is no sidewall setup or take-down necessary. If a spill occurs, a foam ring around the top perimeter of the berm rises with the liquid, preventing a spill. They are constructed of Coploymer 2000™. This helps meet the requirements of EPA 40 CFR 264.175 hazardous waste requirements for spill prevention.
- Sump capacity ranges from 269 gallons to 5,610 gallons and custom sizes are available.
Auto-Collapse Containment Berms
- This easy set-up berm has a unique design which allows the sidewalls to collapse in either direction and spring back automatically to an upright position. This makes rolling drums or driving trucks over them easy and the walls return quickly to a vertical position without any help. Some models have the auto-collapse walls on the entry and exit walls only. Auto-Collapse Containment Berms are made of XR5®, a polymer coated fabric that is durable and chemical resistant.
- Sump capacity ranges from 269 gallons to 7,405 gallons.
Perma Berm
- This is a modular containment system which has sections that are 13½’ wide by 5’ long by 8” high. The sections can be joined together to make the appropriate length. The steel panels are bolted together and sealed with buna rubber gaskets. Drive In/Drive Out ramp provides easy access. Its steel construction has a coat of rust inhibitor primer with a top coat of equipment enamel making it durable and corrosion resistant. This is a cost effective way to comply with government regulations for truck and tanker spill containment. Each system must have two End sections with an unlimited number of Mid sections.
- This is designed to meet EPA and OSHA requirements and is designed for heavy use. It can be relocated and reconfigured and may be used on solid substrates. This berm is good for a fuel transfer station, remote storage pad or wash station.
- Load bearing capacity varies by the number of modules and can vary a great deal; from 1300 pounds to 40,000 pounds.
